Q. What is a Leased Line?
A. A Leased Line is a permanent
connection to the Internet via a fixed line into your building.
It is operational 24 hours per day. There is a fixed annual rental
for the service but no connection or on-line charges. HAB Internet
is a backbone provider which means you will have a very fast connection
straight into the Internet. We do not ride on the back of any other
ISP.
Q. Who puts this line in?
A. The line will be installed
by a Internet carrier such as British Telecom. A qualified engineer
will come to your premises and install a small box where you choose
and that's all you will see. The box will connect to your local network
to complete the circuit.
Q. What equipment do I need?
A. To enable a Leased Line,
you will require a router, which in basic terms is the box which
enables you to go out into the Internet. It is also strongly advisable
that you purchase some kind of firewall which will help prevent
hackers breaking into your network and causing damage to your business.
Routers and firewalls range in price according to your requirements
but can be as little as a few hundred pounds for a 2nd user product.
Q. What are the benefits of a Leased
Line over ISDN or ADSL?
A. A Leased Line does not use
the phone line as ISDN does, so you will not pay for any call charges.
As the Leased Line is a permanent connection, you are on the Internet
24/7 for a fixed regular charge. This means you can utilise the
line overnight and thus make your Internet usage far more cost effective.
A Leased Line is available in many different sizes of bandwidth
from 64K up to hundreds of MB's. With a Leased Line, you have a
guarantee that you will receive the bandwidth you have paid for.
Due to the sharing nature of ADSL, the contention ratio means you
will never get a guarantee of your bandwidth. If speed is important
to you, then a Leased Line is a very serious consideration.
Q. How much does it cost?
A This depends on where you
are located. If you happen to be located in inner London and have
an 0207 phone number, prices can be as little £4950 pa for
a 2MB line not including installation.
Q. How long does it take to install?
A.Installation will take a minimum of 30 working days to complete.
Q. How long is the contract?
A. There is a minimum contract of one year for the first year. At
any time after the first year, you can cancel your line by giving
three months notice. Further discounts are also offered for multiple
year contracts.
What support do you offer?
A.Our Service Level Agreements offer 24/7/365 support should you
require it. All of our equipment is based in Telecity and is serviced
and maintained daily.
